About the Exhibition

Welcome to a fascinating journey through international art from across the globe. This thoughtfully curated exhibition brings together a dynamic collection of works that primarily focus on the female figure, offering a compelling, contemporary perspective on the evolution of figure painting worldwide. Visitors will encounter both traditional and experimental approaches, each piece revealing a distinct story shaped by the social, cultural, and personal landscapes from which it emerged.

With artists from more than ten countries represented, these works offer a powerful lens into an array of cultural and artistic heritages. Each artist brings a singular voice and lived experience, expressed through bold ideas, inventive techniques, and boundary-pushing vision. Some works may intrigue or unsettle; others radiate playfulness and joy. Together, they explore themes of identity, family, resilience, and transformation, creating a vibrant dialogue between tradition and innovation.

We invite you to immerse yourself in this exhibition that truly crosses cultures. May you be inspired by the creativity, skill, and imagination on display — and leave with a deeper appreciation for the richness and vitality of international art.

Meet the Collector.

Sue Ott Rowlands is the 11th President of Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia. She assumed this office on July 1, 2022. Prior to Randolph, Sue served as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Northern Kentucky University. Her career has spanned higher education administration, university teaching, arts administration, and professional theatre.

As a member of Actor's Equity Association (AEA), the professional actors' union, Sue has worked at theatres around the country, as well as in India, Taiwan, New Zealand, Italy, Chile, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Hungary (three national tours), Wales, England, the Czech Republic, and Sri Lanka. Her creative research agenda remains active through the development and touring of solo performance pieces, and she continues to travel extensively as part of her ongoing efforts to establish and promote international study abroad opportunities and arts exchanges.

Sue began collecting art in the 1990s, and her full collection includes paintings, sculpture, and furniture from many of the places she has performed or visited. Her travels have taken her to well over 60 countries.

"I began collecting almost 30 years ago," Sue notes, "with the discovery in Prague of a wonderful, whimsical painting by a Ukrainian artist." The subject matter was three women with bubbles above their heads, as if they were each dreaming of their future: one a bubble of wealth, one a bubble of love, and one a bubble of power. "From that moment on, I realized that I could search for three woman paintings and, indeed, photographs and statuary around the world as I traveled. And so the collection grew to the point it is today, around 500 pieces of artwork from over 60 countries." The central theme of Sue's collection has always been, and continues to be, that of the female figure, how it is perceived and interpreted by artists in various cultures around the world.

Crossing Cultures is Sue's second exhibition at Riverviews, following The Feminine Spirit: American Works from Sue Ott Rowlands' Private Collection in 2025.
