Riverviews’ fall exhibition That Which Forms showcases a true dialogue between artists—Mariam Aziza Stephan, who draws and paints the landscape as portraiture, and Julia Johnson, who responds to these images through poetry.
Julia will lead participants through writing exercises that spark ideas and new ways of seeing, inspired by the artwork around them. This practice, known as “ekphrasis,” engages in a centuries-old tradition of poets and writers who have translated their visual experiences into words. These poems attempt to expand the meaning of the original drawing or painting, imagining a scene, story, or narrative within a static image. Writing them is both creatively energizing and good fun.
This workshop is open to everyone, both experienced writers and those new to creative writing.

Participants in this masterclass will:
learn directly from Julia Johnson, the exhibition’s featured poet
experience the exhibition beyond simple observation
read inspiring examples of ekphrastic poetry
engage with prompts that spark ideas and new ways of seeing
generate several new pieces of writing
share their poetry with one another (optional)
This workshop is open to everyone, both experienced writers and those new to creative writing.
